Special Olympics Team Selection Policy

Two (2) of the male team positions are reserved exclusively for Special Olympics athletes and two (2) of the female team positions are reserved exclusively for Special Olympics athletes.

  1. Athlete Eligibility:
    1. Special Olympics athletes must be under 30 years of age as of December 31, 2009 - born in 1979 or later.
    2. Athletes participating in the Special Olympics events must be registered with and be members in good standing of SONL and have qualified at events sanctioned by SONL.
    3. Athlete Selection will take place at the 2009 Special Olympics Provincial Summer Games in Mount Pearl July 9th -12th
    4. All Athletes who wish to compete for a Canada Games sport have to declare their intentions by June 15th as part of sport specific registration.
    5. There will be no Divisioning. The two fastest athletes of each gender will be selected.

  2. Special Olympics Events:
    1. Male: 100 metres and 200 metres
    2. Female: 100 metres and 200 metres

  3. Standards
    1. Athletes must be able to meet a minimum time standard to move forward to Canada Games. These times are meant to be a guideline to assist clubs in identifying potential Canada Games Athletes

  4. SONL Staff Position:

    Special Olympics Staff will be 1 manager who will work in conjunction with NLAA to manage the SO Athletes. This manager will be Mary Holloway.


  5. Chaperones:

    The Director of Sport & Games is empowered by the Sport Committee to grant or decline chaperone requests on a case-by-case basis. Any athlete attending trails who may need a chaperone should inform SONL as soon as possible.
