Background Information

The Hershey Youth Program, founded in 1975 by Dr. Donald P. Cohen in Charleston, West Virginia, has grown from a local playground event in one community to one of the largest youth sports programs of its kind in North America. The program is designed to encourage physical fitness among youth and emphasize sportsmanship. "The goal of the Hershey´s Track & Field Youth Program is to teach children to be the best they can be. If we accomplish this goal, then the program is a success," said Rafer Johnson, 1960 Olympic decathlon gold medalist and spokesperson for the program. In 1996 Hershey invited Canada to participate in the program. The first Provincial Final in Newfoundland and Labrador was held June 7, 2003, at Pearlgate Track and Field Complex, Mt. Pearl.

The Program

This youth initiative was designed as a way for Hershey to give something back to the community. The program is aimed at 9 to 14 year-old boys and girls and is organized by State or Province. The States and Canadian provinces are grouped into 8 regions which send teams to the National Final (which has been renamed the North American Final for the participation of Canadian athletes.) The program has a fixed list of events and is set up in three two-year age groupings (9/10, 11/12, 13/14). Each Province (State) holds Hershey program meets and a Provincial Final. Results of the Provincial Finals are sent by Provincial Program Coordinators to the Atlantic Canada Regional Coordinator, who ensures that a minimum of 5 and maximum of 25 representatives (a minimum of 5 athletes from all four Atlantic Provinces) from Atlantic Canada are on the Regional team, which is then entered in the North American Final. Regional Coordinators and the Regional Teams are flown at Hershey´s expense to Hershey, PA for the North American Final, August 5 - August 8, 2010.
