2008 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games - Athletics
August 13-16, 2008, Corner Brook (Stephenville)


Sanction

This competition is sanctioned by the Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association. The rules for this competition will be governed by Athletics Canada and the International Amateur Athletics Federation (I.A.A.F.), and variations as per Athletics Canada and NLAA rules.

Participants Per Region
Competitors
12 males and 12 females + 2 athletes with physical disabilities (one male and one female who are members of the NL Special Olympics Association (and have an intellectual disability) and 1 male and 1 female with a physical disability. All competitors must be members of the NLAA.
 
Coaches: 2 / Managers: 1
For teams with Special Olympians, 1 additional coach or manager shall be added to the above.

For teams with both male and female competitors, coaching/managerial staff must be represented by both genders.

Athletes must compete in the region in which they reside, or in the region in which they attend school.

Age Classification

Athletes born between August 17th, 1991 and August 9th, 1997 are eligible to compete in the sport of Athletics in the 2008 NL Summer Games (11 – 16 years of age) Special Olympics athletes must be born between August 17th, 1986 and August 9th, 1997 (11 – 21 years of age).

Coach/Manager Selection

All coaches and managers must be at least 19 years of age as of August 9, 2008. All coaches must have Level 1 Technical in Track and Field. Special Olympics coaches require SO Csp-I (Special Olympics Canada Community Sport Coach Workshop).

The PSO will determine the process for the selection of the coach and manager. This will be communicated to the Regional Coordinator for each region prior to the regional qualifier.

Eligibility

As of July 12, 2008, all competitors must be registered Track and Field members and all coaches and managers must be registered members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association.

Competition Events
  • All events listed below have male and female competition:
    • Track: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m
    • Hurdles: 100mH 0.762m (female) and 110mH 0.914m (male)
    • Relays: 4x100m Relay, 4x100m Integrated Relay, 4x400 Relay
    • Jumps: Long Jump, High Jump
    • Throws: Shot Put (Girls 4kg, Boys 5kg), Discus (Girls 1kg, Boys 1.5kg), Javelin (Girls 600gr, Boys 700gr)
  • Athletes with disabilities:
    • 100m, 400m, Shot Put (Girls/Boys 3kg)
Entries

Each region will be allowed to enter two (2) athletes per event. An athlete will be permitted to register for a maximum of three (3) events plus relays.

Point System
Individual events

1st - 20pts, 2nd - 17pts, 3rd - 15pts, 4th - 13pts,
5th - 12pts, 6th - 11pts, 7th - 10pts, 8th - 9pts,
9th - 8pts, 10th - 7pts, 11th - 6pts, 12th - 5pts,
13th - 4pts, 14th - 3, 15th - 2pts, 16th - 1pt
 
Relays
Place – Point(s):
1st - 40pts, 2nd - 36pts, 3rd - 30pts, 4th - 26pts,
5th - 24pts, 6th - 22pts, 7th - 20pts, 8th - 18pts

Only an athlete that finishes a race will be awarded points. In case of a complete tie the same points will be awarded to both athletes. The next athlete down in the listing will receive points according to the placing that he would have if no tie had taken place. The 4 x 100m integrated relay will not score points.

Awards

Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be presented in each event and division to the first, second and third place individual and relay team.

Achievement Certificates will be presented to the Teams who finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each gender after all events have been completed.
