COMPETITION RULES

The competition will be conducted according to the World Athletics (WA) Handbook and with variations according to Athletics Canada and NLAA rules.

Athletes may compete in events as designated in their age category.

Track events will be run as Timed Finals.

False Start: The athlete(s) responsible for the false start will be disqualified.

All athletes competing in the U16 category and older must use Starting blocks. Starting blocks are optional for Masters.

A crouch start and starting blocks are mandatory for races 400m and shorter. In races longer than 400m, all starts must be made from a standing position.

Starting Commands for races 400m and shorter: “On your marks”, “Set”, the gun will be fired.

Starting Commands for races longer than 400m: “On your marks”, the gun will be fired. Standing Start!

Running in lanes for races 400m and shorter: all runners must remain in their assigned lanes for the duration of the race from start to finish.

Combined races - Where we have to run together two or more competition categories, the events will be ranked separately. For example, in the 100m, we may have one participant in each division. In such case, there will be one race, instead of two or more races, and participants from all categories will run together.

Mixed races: Male and Female Athletes competing in the Wheelchair may participate together in some of the events but will be ranked separately. For all other categories, based on NLAA and Athletics Canada rules mixed gender (female and male) races are not allowed.

TETRATHLON RULES (U12 and U14)

Modified Rules for athletes age U12 and U14

  • - Scoring: U12 and U14 Multi-Events are calculated using the Alberta Youth Scoring Table.
  • - Tetrathlon participants are expected to compete in all four events.
  • - The first event will start at 10:00 am; subsequent events will begin immediately upon the completion of the previous event.
  • - Jumps and Throws: Each competitor will receive two attempts.
  • - Long Jump: U12 and U14 athletes will have a 1m take-off area, and the officials will judge and measure the take-off spot accordingly.
  • - One false start will be allowed per race without disqualification of an athlete. Any further false starts shall result in the disqualification of the athlete making the false start.
  • - Starting blocks are not permitted.
  • - The starting position is optional, such as crouch start, standing, or 3-point start.
  • - Running in lanes: athletes must run the entire distance (Hurdles and 200m) in their designated lanes.
  • - Wearing Spikes is optional.
  • - Turbojav weighs 500 grams and is 42" long / Diameter: 1.5". The Turbojav has a polyethylene body and a super soft elastomer nose.
