The NLAA Provincial Cross-country Championships (Midget, Youth, Junior, Senior, Masters) is organized by the Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association (NLAA).

The competition is open to all participants born in 2008 or earlier; there are no regional events, or any other qualifying meets, required to participate in this provincial championship event.  Students attending non-affiliated schools can take part in the meet and win individual awards. There is no limit to the number of school/club entries.

The NLAA has a funding policy to support elite level athletes attending the Canadian Cross Country Championships, November 24, 2018, Kingston, ON. Interested athletes should review the Funding Policy for eligibility criteria.


Bowring Park, is located in the Waterford Valley, St. John's. No Change rooms on-site.

Location for race bib pick-up, late registration (9:00-9:15am), awards, and results is near the Bowring Park Maintenance Shed.

Parking, Entrance and Access to the Park

Participants and spectators should use the Western entrance Parking Lot to park and enter the Park. Vehicle access to Bowring Park is limited to service vehicles. Vehicles are not permitted on landscaped areas. Vehicles access is not permitted during the event.

Race Course

All races will be held on the trails of Bowring Park. The course is hilly, most of the trail surface is covered with gravel. The race course is suitable for using spikes. The course is marked with orange ribbons, flags, and traffic cones. Two loops of approximate lengths 1550m and 2000m.

Age-Categories & Race Distances

Note: Bantam event is not part of the NLAA Championship.

  • Bantam* (1550m) - born in 2005 through 2008
  • Midget (2900m) - born in 2003 or 2004
    Youth (4200m) - born in 2001 or 2002
  • Junior (6000m) - born in 1999 or 2000
    Senior (8000m) - born in 1999 or earlier (age 20 or over)
    Masters (8000m) - born on November 3, 1984 or earlier (age 35 and over on event day)

All athletes are REQUIRED to compete in their own age classification (see NLAA ACXC funding policy for Midget exemptions) and may NOT move up to compete in another event (As per Athletics Canada Long Term Development Model). The YEAR that the athlete is born will determine the competition category. In the event that the athlete competes in an incorrect category the result will not be recognized. It is the school's responsibility to ensure that their athletes compete in the appropriate category.

Students from NLAA Affiliated Schools cannot claim discount for this event. Individual Competitive Membership is required or the purchase of One Day NLAA Event Permit.


$10.00 for NLAA members holding 2018 or 2019 Individual Competitive Membership

$11.00 non-NLAA members (Entry fee includes $1 One Day Event Permit.)


Processing fee and HST applies to the meet fee being charged.

$15.00 non-NLAA members (Entry fee includes $5 One Day Event Permit.)

Race Number Pickup

Race number pickup begins at 9:00 am, Saturday, November 3, at a tent near the start area.

Awards -

  • Individual Awards
  • Medals will be awarded to all 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each age category for male and female.
  • Team Awards
  • MIDGET & YOUTH categories - A Championship Banner will be awarded to the 1st place team for boys and girls.
  • Bantam category - Girls and Boys winning teams (the scoring 4 members only) will receive gold medals.
  • Junior, Senior and Masters categories - there are no team awards.
  • To be eligible for the team awards, Schools/Clubs must be affiliated with the NLAA prior to event registration deadline - 1:00 pm, Friday, November 2, 2018. School Affiliation Fee is $25.00 per school year.

Team Declaration

  • Team Scores are kept for Schools and Clubs affiliated with the NLAA prior to event registration deadline - 1:00 pm, Friday, November 2, 2018.
  • Schools/Clubs may enter as many runners as they wish. The first four (4) runners to finish in an event will score with regards to team competition.
  • Students from feeder schools are not eligible to compete for a school other than the one they attend.
  • Only NLAA affiliated school/club teams are eligible to enter the team competition.
  • School or Club name missing from the online registration form?
    Only NLAA Affiliated Clubs/Schools are listed in the online Team form (school names only in Bantam/Midget/Youth categories).
    Participants from schools/clubs not listed must select Unattached Newfoundland And Labrador (UNNL).
