About

The NLAA 2023 XC Championships is organized by the Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association (NLAA).

  • Minimum age: The competition is open to participants born in 2011 or earlier.
  • No regional or other qualifying events are required to participate in the provincial championship.
  • Only affiliated clubs and schools are eligible to score team points.
  • Students attending non-affiliated schools can participate in the meet and win individual awards.
  • There is no limit to the number of school/club entries.
  • Students from NLAA Affiliated Schools cannot claim discounts for this event.
  • No Course Tour. Participants are expected to be familiar with the course layout and start and finish areas.

No headphone policy:

The wearing of headphones or similar devices is not permitted while competing. Athletes will be asked to remove and store their listening devices.
Athletes wearing headphones/earbuds while competing will be disqualified from the race, and no refunds will be issued.


Canadian Cross Country Championships

The NLAA has a funding policy to support elite-level athletes attending the Canadian Cross Country Championships, Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Mooney’s Bay and Terry Fox Athletic Facility, Ottawa. Interested athletes should review the Funding Policy for eligibility criteria.

Location

Bowring Park, is located in the Waterford Valley, St. John's. No Change rooms on-site.

Parking, Entrance and Access to the Park

Participants and spectators should use the Western entrance Parking Lot to park and enter the Park. Vehicle access to Bowring Park is limited to service vehicles. Vehicles are not permitted on landscaped areas. Vehicles access is not permitted during the event.

Race Course

All races will be held on the trails of Bowring Park. The course is hilly; most of the trail surface is covered with gravel. The racecourse is NOT suitable for using spikes. The course is marked with orange ribbons, flags, and traffic cones.

Age-Categories

  • *U16 (2km) - born in 2008 through 2011
    U18 (4km) - born in 2006 or 2007
  • U20 (6km) - born in 2004 or 2005
    Senior (6km) - born in 2004 through November 3, 1988
    Masters (6km) - born on November 4, 1989 or earlier (age 35 and over on event day)

*U16 athletes wishing to be considered for funding to attend the Athletics Canada Cross-country Championships must compete in the U18 event at the Provincial Championships. Athletes who choose this option will not be eligible for medals in the U16 division.

All athletes are REQUIRED to compete in their own age group based on their year of birth (see NLAA ACXC funding policy for U16 exemptions) and may NOT move up to compete in another event (As per Athletics Canada Long Term Development Model). The YEAR that the athlete is born will determine the competition category. In the event that the athlete competes in an incorrect category, the result will not be recognized. It is the participant's responsibility to ensure that they compete in the appropriate category.

Regular Entry Fee per participant -

One Day Event Permit or Individual Competitive Membership is required.

U16 & U18

$11.00 ($10.00 for NLAA members holding 2023 or 2024 Individual Competitive Membership)
(Entry fee includes $1 One Day Event Permit.)

U20 / SENIOR / MASTERS

$15.00 ($10.00 for NLAA members holding 2023 or 2024 Competitive Membership)
(Entry fee includes $5 One Day Event Permit.)

Awards -

  • Individual Awards
  • Medals will be awarded to all 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each age category for male and female.
  • Team Awards
  • U16 & U18 categories - A Championship Banner will be awarded to the 1st place team for boys and girls.
  • U20, Senior and Masters categories - there are no team awards.
  • To be eligible for the team awards, Schools/Clubs must be affiliated with the NLAA prior to event registration deadline - 2:00 pm, Friday, November 3, 2023. School Affiliation Fee is $30.00 per school year.

Team Declaration

  • Team Scores are kept for Schools and Clubs affiliated with the NLAA before the event registration deadline - 2:00 pm, Friday, November 3, 2023.
  • Schools/Clubs may enter as many runners as they wish. The first four (4) runners to finish in an event will score with regard to team competition.
  • Students from feeder schools are not eligible to compete in a school other than the one they attend.
  • Only NLAA-affiliated school/club teams are eligible to enter the team competition.
  • Q: My School/Club name is missing from the online registration form.
    A: Only NLAA Affiliated Clubs/Schools are listed in the online Team form (school names only in U16/U18 categories).
  • Participants from schools/clubs not listed must select Unattached Newfoundland And Labrador (UNNL).
