About

The Junior and Senior High School Provincials are open to ALL schools in this province - NLAA-affiliated and non-affiliated. The benefit of affiliating your school with NLAA is that affiliated schools are eligible for team awards, and the $1 per-student permit fee is waived.  Please click here for information on School Affiliation .

No regional events or qualifying meets are required to participate.

  • Students must represent and compete for the school they are currently enrolled in. Students from feeder schools are not eligible to participate in these Championships.
  • Categories

    • JUNIOR HS: The Junior Championships are open to girls and boys currently enrolled in grades 7 through 9. Athletes will compete in a single category, regardless of their specific grade level.
    • SENIOR HS: The Senior Championships are open to all high schools and their students. While the Senior HS competition is primarily intended for high school students, eligibility is extended to students registered at that school who are in grade 9. Please note that junior high schools and their students are not eligible to participate in the Senior HS category.
  • We encourage ambulatory throwers and runners to participate. They will be integrated with able-bodied participants during the competition.
  • NEW in 2025: 100m, 200m, 400m, and 4x100m Relays: Starting blocks are optional, but athletes must use a crouch start (4-point start).

Individual and Team Competition Guidelines

  • Awards
    • Individual: Gold, silver, and bronze individual medals are presented immediately after each event.
    • Team: Provincial Championship banners are awarded to both the Female and Male category winners. Only NLAA-affiliated schools are eligible for these team awards.
  • Individual competition: Students from non-affiliated schools can participate and win individual awards; however, they are not eligible for relay events.
  • Team competition: Only students from NLAA-affiliated schools can contribute points towards the team competition.
  • Number of Participants: Schools may enter an unlimited number of participants in each event, including relay teams*.
  • Relay Events: Only NLAA-affiliated schools are allowed to enter team(s) in the relay competition.
  • Maximum Events: A competitor may enter a maximum of three (3) individual events plus one (1) relay event. A student can be part of only one relay team.
  • “Able Bodied” competitors cannot be entered in Wheelchair events.
  • Wheelchair:
    • All Wheelchair athletes must have a racing helmet with a hard protective shell, recognized with an international safety standard.
    • In the Junior and Senior HS competition, the wheelchair track events are open to all classifications but will compete in the open class and will therefore compete for the same set of medals as all athletes entered in the event.
  • Scoring: The top two (2) ranked athletes from each school in each event will score points. Additionally, only one (1) relay team per school will score points.
    • Wheelchair and Special Olympic Wheelchair and Special Olympic athletes will receive individual awards, but their placing will not count toward team standings.
    • Points for team placements will be awarded based on the number of schools affiliated with NLAA competing in the two categories. For example, if there are 15 eligible teams in the Championships, the top competitor will receive 30 points, and the points will decrease by 1 for each subsequent placement. To clarify, the points awarded for rankings in both the junior and senior categories will be the same.
