Gordon Brockerville

A sports career that lasted close to 40 years includes great success as an athlete and extremely important contributions as a builder within athletics for Gordon Brockerville of Marystown. This dedicated individual has been a beneficial force for the sport since 1969 and his efforts continue to help many individuals who have had the pleasure to work and compete with him.

During an 11-year period, from 1979 to 1989, he dominated marathon running within the province. He won 15 major distance events, including seven marathon victories, to establish himself among Newfoundland and Labrador’s best distance runners ever.

In addition to his marathon record, he posted ten km, ten mile and 20 km victories against the best the province had to offer and was very successful in several major U.S. marathons and other races in Canada.

As a builder, Gordon Brockerville was the leader for all track and field and/or distance running on the Burin Peninsula for 20 years. His valuable contributions to athletics on a provincial basis are a manner of record.

Named Marystown’s Athlete of the Decade for the 1980s, he was voted the Town’s Athlete of the Year three times. He was provincial athletics athlete of the year for 1980 and inducted into the Memorial University Athletic Honors Society in 1976.

In addition to his running successes, he enjoyed a soccer career that included being a member of the Memorial University varsity clubs and two seasons with the Feildians senior team. Following his running career he became involved in Shotokan Karate.
