Ferd Hayward had an international race walking career that included a large number of first place finishes. He was the first Newfoundlander to participate in the Olympics Games for Canada in the 1952 games in Helsinki, Finland. He was the first winner of the Male Athlete of the Year award in 1 95 1. Hayward held the provincial record for the one mile, 10 mile and 20 miles, walking races during his career and consistently improving his times. Besides his Olympic performance he competed in top race walking events in North America, placing first in races in Hamilton, Guelph, Baltimore and New Jersey. He was third in the US Open Championships in Chicago.
