Stephanie Adey set a high level of performance that was the pacemaker for many Newfoundland and Labrador athletes. The young lady, who also starred in soccer, especially performed at the highest level of the long jump.

Her career started at the 1987 Canadian Legion National Championships in Calgary, where she won the gold medal. It was the first gold medal for Newfoundland and Labrador in the competition in seven years.

Jumping in the midget division, 14 and 15 year olds, she had a winning distance of 5.16 meters, thus setting a new provincial record as she broke the old mark of 5.07 meters.

It was extremely evident that this young athlete was an exceptional performer who was devoted to jumping as far as she could. A popular competitor, in 1991 she wore the Memorial University colors at the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Universities Championship in Windsor, Ontario. She finished ninth in the long jump with a season high of 5.23 meters. She demonstrated her versatility with an eleventh place finish against 325 of the best athletes within Canada with a triple jump of 10.73 meters.

It should be noted that she was a very strong sprinter for several years and won many 100 meter and 200 meter sprints.
