Inducted: Wednesday, July 27, 2016

A graduate of Prince of Wales Collegiate in St John’s, Steve Wiseman started his track and field career in 1986. He is by far the best thrower Newfoundland and Labrador has ever produced. The javelin throw was his specialty but he also holds provincial records in the shot put and discus. It could be a long time before any other Newfoundland and Labrador thrower can improve on Wiseman’s records.

He hurled the javelin 50.10 meters in 1987 and improved to 54.54 meters in 1988. By 1989 he captured a new provincial record of 59.68 meters with room to improve, and improve he did. At the national training camp in 1990 he recorded a 60.94 meter throw.

During the summer of 1990 he met his new coach George Stanoev, and this situation improved his ability tremendously. In 1991 his new provincial record stood at 67.02 meters.

In addition to his record javelin throw, Wiseman held the provincial shot put record with a toss of 14.06 meters and his discus throw of 43.08 meters is the best the province has ever seen.

Steve Wiseman has clearly demonstrated that he was an exceptional, a quality athlete who greatly enhanced throwing competitions.
