2024 NLAA Elite Athlete Funding Policy
Canadian Road Running National Championships

The Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association (NLAA) has limited funds available to provide partial support to NLAA members to attend Athletics Canada 2024 Canadian Road Running Championships:

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. NLAA registered competitive (road running and track & field) members for the current year will be eligible for consideration. Performance standards must be achieved while registered with the NLAA as a competitive member.
  2. Achieve Performance standards during the qualifying period.
  3. Be competition ready and capable of performing at the qualifying level at the Championship.
  4. Have participated in at least two (2) NLAA Provincially Sanctioned Road Races of any distance in the current race season.
  5. Deadline: Funding requests must be sent to athletics@nlaa.ca before April 15 for Championships held in May, and before August 1, for Championships held in September/October. All applications will be reviewed within seven (7) days of the deadline. Athletes requesting funding must provide the following information:
    1. Name of Championship event seeking funding for
    2. Race name and date where the performance standard was achieved
    3. Competitive membership status for 2024
    4. List two NLAA events in 2024 that you were a competitor
    5. Current mailing address

Funding Details

  1. Funding is available for National Championships in the following distances: 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, and Marathon.
  2. Funding standards achieved in one event can be used to qualify for the next event distance above or below . Example: 10km standard time will allow an athlete to be qualify for a 5km and Hal-Marathon championship funding.
  3. Selected runners must make their arrangements for travel, accommodations and registration.
  4. Athletes cannot request funding retroactively.
  5. NLAA funding will be remitted following the athlete's return from the Championship.
  6. This financial assistance is not transferable to any other race.
  7. A maximum of 4 runners per Championship will receive funding. Example: Two (2) female and two (2) male runners, or up to four (4) females or four males, as long as the total number of funded athletes is four (4) or less than four (4).
  8. Discretionary funding: if no Athlete has met the performance standard by the deadline for a given distance, the NLAA reserves the right to fund the number 1 ranked male and female athlete for the given distance.
    1. Athletes would still have to meet all the Eligibility Criteria.
    2. The number 1 ranked athlete will be based on performances achieved during the current competitive season or the last 12 months in Half or Full Marathons.
    3. This discretionary funding will be limited to the first-ranked runner only. No allowance will be offered to any other athlete.
    4. Funding for any athlete is limited to a maximum of funding for two national championships each calendar year.

Funding Standards

  1. Runners must attain the performance standards at NLAA-sanctioned road races and on Athletics Canada-certified courses.
  2. Performance standards for the 5km and 10km must be achieved within the previous six (6) months; Half and Full Marathons within the last 12 months.
  3. The maximum amount of funding is $500.00 per athlete per Championship.
